Brian – Head of Strategic Programmes

Working in strategy means I’m at the very heart of helping decide what the BT of tomorrow will look like. My team is like an internal task force of consultants looking for new investments to help our business grow.

We pitch ideas and seek support on multi-million pound projects covering every area of our business: from TV, Sport and broadband to mobility. We look at all aspects too, from listening to what our customers want right through to agreeing the investment decision. We gauge the impact they’ll have and advise on everything, from sales and service to finance and regulatory.

Two of our biggest projects have been the auctions for the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League sports rights. I’ll look at which rights we want, make sure this aligns with the editorial vision for BT Sport, how we’ll sell them profitably.

Each time it’s like launching a multi-million pound start-up business – with all the deadlines and intense pressure that goes with that. We have to become experts in whatever we’re working on very quickly.

Although I have a technical background, I’ve moved around in the company, working on some of our most exciting new projects. I’ve been encouraged to build my business skills along the way.

Finance: You’ll help us grow our business by partnering colleagues from sales and marketing to product and proposition management. As well as managing all our billings and collections, you’ll make sure our systems and processes are world-class. And your key role in reducing our costs and improving our cash position will benefit our customers, our shareholders, and our pensioners.

I was keen to join a company that was open to change and where I’d be able to take on new challenges. And be trusted and encouraged to push myself. I can’t think of another company this size that’s going through this level of change in every area.

Every day is about finding ways to make things easier for our customers. Easier for them to contact us. Easier to buy from us. And easier to sort things out quickly if there’s an issue. To do this we need to get things right from the start and part of this is getting the numbers right. That’s where I come in.

When I joined I was in the mobile team – a real challenge all round. It was a new product, so we were building everything from scratch. And everything was new to me.

I’d worked as an external auditor before so I was used to going in to new businesses and getting to know them very quickly. That helped me cope. And the support I got from the people around me who were buzzing.

One thing I hadn’t had to do before was work closely with different teams: in Customer Care for example. Now I often have to tailor complex financial information for different audiences. That may mean presenting to senior managers several times a week.

I’m proud of what I’ve already achieved and excited to make things even better.

Legal: From audacious sports rights deals and acquisitions worth billions – the kind of intense work others turn to external law firms for – our in-house legal experts cover it all. There’s almost no area of the law you won’t get a chance to work in. From criminal investigations and intellectual property disputes, to competition and regulatory work and employment law.

Programme management: We’re the people who make sure we’re delivering our strategy. We focus on complex, high-value, high-risk projects and programmes, keeping to timing, costs, and putting our customers first in everything we do. From the launch of BT Sport, BT TV, and BT Mobile, to new products such as our eco-friendly, award-winning fibre broadband Home Hubs, and multi-million pound deals like UEFA Champions League. We’re also at the heart of business transformation, making sure we’re on track for growth.

Haider Khan

Haider - BT Sport programme manager

I’d never have imagined the kind of work I’d get into when I joined. I moved into BT Sport before we launched, project managing sales to commercial premises. Today we’ve got millions of residential customers and we’re in more pubs and clubs than major competitors – quite an achievement after just two years.

When a new product launch gets the green light it’s my job to turn it from an idea into a reality. I project manage it into our Sport channels. So I’ll work with the teams to ensure our studios are set up and if we’ve got all the operations and technology to sell and deliver it. For our UEFA Champions League coverage or Aviva Premiership Rugby that’s a huge ask.

I’ll also support our production teams to think about everything from presenters and shows to how our live coverage and highlights will look on TV screens and mobile devices.

I’ve got to be a good organiser in my job – there are so many different strands to it and tough deadlines. I work with colleagues in every part of BT as well as my own team who can be based anywhere in the UK. It’s a bit like being captain of a sports team.

I joined on the graduate scheme and I’ve been lucky to be part of so many different teams – from technology and research to customer support and business transformation, travelling all over the world.

I’m proud to be part of a company that offers you so much flexibility in your job and gives you time to volunteer in your community. I help coach schoolkids at Leyton Orient. I hope I’ve helped a few – I know they’ve taught me a few things about myself.
